About San Diego State University

San Diego State University, commonly known as simply SDSU, is the largest and oldest higher education institution in the greater area of San Diego City, which is the 9th largest city in USA, the 2nd largest city in California, as well as the 46th largest city in the Americas.

SDSU was founded in March, 1897, first beginning as San Diego Normal School, being originally established in order to educate future female elementary school teachers, becoming San Diego State Teachers College, in 1923.

In 1935, San Diego State Teachers College became San Diego State College, until, 1960, when the institution became a part of the California College System, now known as California State University system, being finally named San Diego State University, in 1970, the name by which the institution is also currently known.

Today, SDSU is known as being the largest university in San Diego, as well as the 5th largest one in California, having a student body estimated at a number of approximately 35 000. The university offers master’s, bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in a total of 151 fields of study, providing most of the doctoral degrees in the California State University system, currently in 16 research and academic disciplines.

For 2 years in a row, the university has been ranked number 1 most productive research university, among schools with 14 or fewer Ph.D. programs based on the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, also being designated a ‘’Research University’’, with higher research activity, by the Carnegie Foundation.

The athletic teams from SDSU are known as the San Diego State Aztecs, who competed in the Southern California Conference, until 1939, when the university joined the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Aztecs prticipate in various intercollegiate competitions, in different sports, including in basketball, tennis, golf and baseball, currently participating in the NCAA Division I FBS, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, in water polo, the Pacific-10 Conference, in soccer, and in the ACHA, in ice hockey.
